There has never been a better time than now to set up your own ultimate home gym. The coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe has caused your favourite workout joint to close with no idea of when they will be able to re-open, and with every man and his dog taking up running for an excuse to get out of the house, your local public park is less ‘social distancing’ and more ‘merry mingling’.
It makes sense then to set up your own well equipped at-home gym space where you can work up a sweat streaming your favourite fitness classes or just monkeying around when you need to release some pent up energy – here’s our guide to the equipment you’ll need to create the ultimate home gym.
Choose a room in your house that is light and airy for your home gym. Unless you have an inbuilt air conditioning unit, windows are a must. It’s important that your workout space is inviting to encourage yourself to spend more time in it. We recommend brightening up the place with air-filtering succulents, motivational posters and oversized mirrors so you can check yourself out!
You should sympathise with your downstairs neighbours when choosing the correct floor covering for your space. Nothing says bad neighbour like someone jumping and dropping weights above your head whilst you’re trying to work from home. Here are some cushioning options to consider.
The Main Event
Unless you’re living like royalty it’s unlikely your home gym space is going to be very big, so we recommend investing in just one machine that does it all. For those missing their favourite pilates class, make like Chrissy Teigan and acquire your own reformer for home. Those that prefer strength training should consider a multi gym cable machine or the at-home rig.
Your new all-in-one machine is all well and good, but it does have its limitations. Never underestimate the versatility of free weights, they come in all shapes and sizes but we’re stripping it back to the bare essentials. Barbell, dumbbells, medicine ball and an innovative weight-adjustable kettlebell.
The lockdown won’t last forever and soon we’ll all be booking trips and checking things off on our adventure bucket lists. Invest in these extremely useful, essential items that you can pack in your suitcase and use on your travels when you are ready to venture out into the great outdoors.
Take Up a New Skill
Who said working out at home had to be boring? With so much time on your hands it would be a waste not to spend it trying something new. Consider investing in one of these more unique items to spice up your workout routine (and perhaps the bedroom too!).
Don’t Forget the Tech
Unless you live with an extremely easy going partner or housemate, the likelihood is that they will not be all too pleased with your high BPM, uplifting beats blasting through the house at all hours of the day, so it’s essential to invest in a good pair of headphones for your training.
We know how accustomed you’ve become to the little luxuries of your regular gym, the availability of ice cold water and the refreshing relief of a chilled towel. Invest in a mini fridge for your convenience, this is the ultimate home gym after all. Finally, we must consider the recovery.
